"What I am seeking is not the real and not the unreal but rather the unconscious, the mystery of the instinctive in the human race."

Amedeo Modigliani

Portraiture, throughout the ages has always fascinated me.  Who are these people, what kind of lives did they lead, were they happy, did the artist capture and represent this person or was it just one facet of their life.  Clues from the composition help in deciphering their lives and adds to their allure, mystery and power.

I use portraiture not to define the individual but create more of a mystique, to draw in the viewer from the subtleness as a way to convey these concepts because I find many subtleties can be derived from a person's face. Whether it's the look of tenderness, pain, confusion, aggression, hope, or arrogance, the vastness of expressions represented by each subject must convey the essence of the message in order to connect to the audience.  It is in the juxtaposition of different props within the piece that the message emerges.
